Public Affairs Director, Cascade Land Conservancy

Cascade Land Conservancy seeks an experienced, creative leader who will be integral in advancing the goals of the Cascade Agenda. This is a mid-level management position, responsible for strategic guidance of outreach, education, communications, and community organizing necessary to achieve city, county, regional, state and federal policy objectives.

The Director will work with colleagues across the organization; counterparts representing a wide range of organizational stakeholders; engage members of CLC’s staff, board of directors, council of advisors, trustees, Cascade Agenda Leadership Team and Coalition members; and establish a strategic plan and annual work plan including identification and utilization of necessary staffing support, policy consultant and contract lobbyist support. The Director will work with CLC policy analysts and interested stakeholders in the development of legislation; will work with CLC’s communications and outreach staff to educate and motivate stakeholders and opinion-makers in support of policy initiatives; and finally engage community members, organizational leaders and stakeholders in coordination with contract lobbyists to achieve enactment of legislation.

Cascade Land Conservancy (CLC) is an innovative regional nonprofit land conservation and smart growth organization, with offices in Pierce, King, Mason, Snohomish, and Kittitas counties in Washington State. The Cascade Agenda is a far reaching vision serving Pierce, Snohomish, King and Kittitas counties for the next 100 years. The overarching goals of the Cascade Agenda are to protect the region’s working farms, forests and natural lands, while supporting vibrant communities. The Agenda was launched by CLC three years ago; since that time CLC has established the necessary staffing infrastructure and a broad coalition to achieve these goals.

Additional Qualifications:
Required, demonstrated accomplishments that indicate:

  • Ability to oversee multiple projects, staff, contractors and a wide range of resources, simultaneously
  • Ability to effectively communicate with diverse audiences in range of settings and scales
  • Ability to negotiate in complex stakeholder processes
  • Ability to analyze complex policy issues and associated documents
  • Ability to craft a communications strategy to increase awareness of particular policy issues
  • Ability to effectively engage coalition members and partners to secure support for a policy issue
  • Ability and willingness to work necessary hours during peak legislative season or project period
  • A minimum of two years of professional experience in legislative, political, or campaign work

The ideal candidate will also possess:

  • A Bachelor’s degree, with an advanced degree preferred, in a relevant topic area
  • Five or more years of professional experience in legislative, political, or campaign work
  • Understanding and experience in Washington State land use policy and legislative processes
  • Existing relationships with key state or local decision makers
  • Experience working with media and community organizing
