Operations Director, ONE/Northwest

ONE/Northwest (www.onenw.org) is a growing Seattle-based nonprofit that helps environmental organizations transform the way they communicate, build relationships and partner with people and institutions. We develop websites, databases, email newsletters, collaboration and citizen engagement tools – and the strategies to use these tools to engage people in influencing decisions that impact the environment. We operate on a movement-wide scale, strengthening connections between groups working on a range of issues and approaches to protecting the environment.

In this newly developed, key leadership role for the ONE/Northwest team, you will have a unique ability to make an impact as part of a growing organization. In partnership with the Executive Director, you will run the operations of ONE/Northwest’s business to ensure sustainability and growth. Key areas of focus:

Human Capital Leadership

  • Develop and refine staff and program planning, goal setting, and performance management for ONE/Northwest. Ensure these management processes are aligned with the values and culture of the organization and that they help it develop and grow.
  • Drive the staff planning, hiring and recruiting process for program, administrative and fundraising staff in alignment with budget and organizational plans.
  • Help define job roles and duties and build competitive compensation programs for the ONE/Northwest team.
  • Build, develop, champion and guide the delivery of ONE/Northwest’s Leadership development programs. Manage professional development initiatives for all staff members.
  • In partnership with the Executive Director and board, continue to ensure that ONE/Northwest hires, develops and retains our people to further our mission and support of our clients. Build and maintain a strong culture for our team, including a focus on values, culture and balance for each team member.

Finance, Accounting and Legal

  • Working in partnership with outside resources, manage the administration of ONE/Northwest’s financial processes and reporting.
  • Provide direction, coaching and leadership to our office manager. Together with our office manager, ensure our facilities are well run and support our staff.
  • Working with the Executive Director, program and fundraising staff, develop annual operating budget for ONE/Northwest. Provide guidance and support to program and fundraising teams to maintain ongoing rolling revenue and expense forecasts throughout the year.
  • Develop and deliver accurate and timely monthly, quarterly and annual financial statements. Ensure staff and board are educated and understand the information presented and can use the reporting tools to make effective business and governance decisions.
  • Develop standardized processes, tools and templates for project budget budgets. Support program staff in development of restricted grant budgets and in managing their spend-down.
  • As needed, work in partnership with outside legal counsel (or pro bono counsel) on any legal matters that pertain to ONE/Northwest’s operations.

Board Stewardship

  • Support the development and education of the board of directors. In partnership with the Executive Director, help drive succession planning and officer development within the board. Manage board development committee.
  • Recruit new members to the board who bring the depth of experience, skills and connections that will help ONE/Northwest further our mission.
  • Ensure that board meetings provide board members with opportunities to develop skills and make a difference at ONE/Northwest.
  • Working within the framework of the development plan, support the Board in effective stewardship and fundraising within our communities of interest.
  • Provide operational support to the Executive Director in managing the executive committee of the board.
  • In collaboration with the Executive Director, and the executive committee of the board, develop effective agendas for each board meeting and a long range calendar of objectives for the fiscal year – short, medium and long term planning.
  • Support and ensure compliance with key governance and policy guidelines and ensure that policies are evolving with the organization in ways that best support its mission.
    Volunteer Management
  • Create and manage meaningful, valuable volunteer activity with strong synergy for the organization’s mission. Work with staff to determine the needs and ensure volunteer activities are structured in a way that is mutually beneficial.
  • Develop and manage a central resource that helps match interested volunteers with optimal opportunities to contribute.
  • Develop a formal advisory council made up of clients and functional experts.
    Skills, Qualifications and Experience
  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent, business degree ideal.
  • 3+ years experience in non-profit administration, or similar experience in for-profit setting.
  • Experience building and managing budgets, forecasts and providing financial statements for board, staff and leadership. Advanced Microsoft Excel skills.
  • General knowledge and experience in internet, communications technology, web or other business.
  • Attention to detail, process orientation – systemic thinking and analytical rigor with regard to process, organizational tools and systems.
  • Initiative and drive, willingness to roll up sleeves to do what needs to get done. Highly organized and detail-oriented. Ability to prioritize tasks, manage time effectively, and meet deadlines.
  • High energy, creativity, resourcefulness and entrepreneurial spirit.
  • Demonstrated experience leading and working effectively with cross functional teams. Experience in managing resources including staff, volunteers and financial resources while maintaining work plan objectives to meet current and future demands
  • Excellent communication skills. Vision and ability to see the future for what the role will involve and set strategic direction for business.
  • Passion and commitment to the mission of ONE/Northwest and interest in making a significant impact with our partners and clients in environmental advocacy.

This is a full-time position located in Seattle, WA. The salary range is $58-65,000, depending on experience. ONE/Northwest offers a fun and meaningful workplace, a generous benefits package, and the opportunity to work a flexible work week. We are an equal opportunity employer
