Outreach Coordinator, Solid Ground (formerly Fremont Public Association)

The Statewide Poverty Action Network is a program of Solid Ground- a coalition of over 5,000 individuals and organizations taking action to eliminate the root causes of poverty through public debate and community organizing.

This position will develop and implement a comprehensive plan to reach out to, recruit, organize and mobilize people from targeted geographic communities across the state with the specific focus on people with low incomes and people of color. Work to increase the number of people who are active members of Poverty Action; recruit, coordinate and supervise volunteers to work with Poverty Action. Conduct outreach presentations at colleges, universities and community events to recruit volunteers. Interview volunteers to identify their interests, connect them to Poverty Action projects, and provide on-going assistance and support; develop and maintain a Speakers Bureau of individuals willing to share their personal story with the media, policy makers and the public; understand and track anti-poverty policies and developments and be able to make public presentations on this information. Understand and be able to educate the public about the public benefits system, and federal and state legislative processes; and develop and distribute informational materials necessary for education, outreach and recruitment. Maintain the Poverty Action website, database and e-mail alert system. Support the Director and Coordinating Board with administrative tasks as needed.

Additional Qualifications:
Requires one of the following:

  • Two years of experience working in a social service or non-profit setting; OR
  • Bachelor’s degree in a related field; OR
  • Any combination of education, experience and measurable performance which demonstrates the capability to perform the duties of this position.

Also requires:

  • One year of experience recruiting and coordinating volunteers;
  • Experience designing and maintaining web pages and email distribution lists;
  • Excellent communication skills, both oral and written;
  • Excellent customer service skills;
  • Ability to work individually in a self-directed manner and as part of a team in group projects. Ability to take general direction and apply it to specific circumstances as the situation requires;
  • Detail oriented, with strong organizational skills;
  • Willingness and ability to work with people from a variety of racial, cultural and economic backgrounds, with various lifestyles, sexual orientations, and of all ages;
  • Strong knowledge of computer software (Microsoft Word, Access, Excel, and Outlook);
  • Ability to work some evenings and weekends.

Benefits and Compensation:

Benefits include earning 16.3 paid personal leave hours per month to start, 11 paid holidays, medical, dental, short-term and long-term disability insurance; 401K employer contributed profit sharing plan (fully vested after 6 months of work), tax sheltered health care, dependent care and transportation accounts. This is a 40-hour per week union position, paying $15.75 per hour.
