Rep. Christine Kilduff Earns "Legislator of the Week" Award for Work Supporting Veterans
Kilduff (D-University Place) Is A Leading Advocate in Olympia for Veterans and Military Families

Fuse Washington named Rep. Christine Kilduff (D-University Place) as the "Legislator of the Week" for her work to expand services for veterans and military families.

Kilduff2.jpg The state House recently passed ESB 2534, which would increase community outreach programs to veterans in rural and remote areas. Many veterans live outside large cities where support and services are focused. Kilduff's bill helps veterans in remote areas more easily access health care, employment, educational, vocational, mental health, transportation, and substance abuse services.

"Rep. Christine Kilduff is a leading advocate for veterans and military families in the Legislature," said Erin Haick, Political Director of Fuse Washington. "Kilduff's work will ensure that the men and women who have dedicated their lives to defending our country receive the support they need."

Kilduff's bill establishes an innovative pilot program that integrates support from the Department of Veterans' Affairs and other public agencies. Thanks to her tireless efforts, Kilduff's bill received unanimous support from all 98 members of the state House and is awaiting action in the state Senate.

"At a time of fierce partisanship in Olympia, Kilduff has been able to work across party lines and bring together Democrats and Republicans to get things done for veterans and military families," Haick said. "We hope the Senate will follow their lead to act on behalf of those who serve our country."

In addition to improving outreach to veterans in rural areas, Kilduff also sponsored HB 2496 to create an office run by the state Attorney General which will provide pro-bono legal services to military service members, veterans, and their families. Veterans at times need legal assistance with disability claims, child custody cases, domestic violence, immigration, and more. This bill also received unanimous, bipartisan support in the House.

Previous winners of the "Legislator of the Week" award include Rep. Luis Moscoso (D-Bothell) for his leadership on the Washington Voting Rights Act and Rep. Tana Senn (D-Mercer Island) for her work to ensure equal pay for women.
