This Sunday, June 19 is Juneteenth, commemorating the day that enslaved Africans in Galveston, Texas, learned from Union soldiers that they were free, marking total freedom from slave trade across all states.
Juneteenth is a celebration of the emancipation, culture, and contributions of Black Americans in our country. Many local organizations are hosting events honoring the day across Washington. Just a few of those are:
Seattle: Northwest African American Museum’s Skate to Freedom Party
Tacoma: Jeannette Twitty's Juneteenth Community Gathering - Parable Books
Auburn: The City of Auburn Juneteenth Festival
Spokane: Juneteenth Praise in the Park - Inland Northwest Juneteenth Coalition
Bellingham: Bellingham Unity Committee presents Juneteenth Freedom Day
Fuse will be observing Juneteenth as well by participating in many of these events, supporting Black-owned businesses in our community, and giving our staff the day off. As a result, our offices will be closed on Monday, June 20.
